After that, we’ll see where the console stands. I have a hunch that whatever shortcomings the Switch may have as a piece of hardware will be masked by the sheer glory of Zelda for a good long while. I think Zelda will drive a ton of Switch sales, but I’ve said this before, it’s going to be hard to separate out Zelda as a great game and Switch as a system at launch here. Even as good as Zelda is, it will still be a tough sell for people to buy essentially a $360 copy of a game. What this means for the Switch, I don’t know. This may prove to be a case where even an immense amount of hype is matched by the ultimate quality of the game.

I have avoided reading a single full review, as I want to go in blind when my Switch (hopefully) arrives today, but I have been listening to my colleague Erik Kain and editor Alex Knapp gush about the game for weeks now (Erik gave it one of its perfect 10s) and they do not impress easily. And given a relatively cynical games press (myself among them) and overall Nintendo fatigue through the last two generations, it’s hard to understate what an enormous, incredible accomplishment this is. If everything remains the same, there’s a case to be made that Breath of the Wild is in the top three best reviewed games for as long as review scores have been tracked. interactivity and player engagement at its finest. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is here, a resoundingly jubilant paradigm shift for a series born from the simple joy that Shigeru Miyamoto has when exploring the forests and caves that had surrounded his childhood home. That may change as the game is officially released and smaller outlets get copies when they didn’t get advance units, but it’s unclear who else will be factored into these totals. Breath of the Wild is the current high water mark for gaming as a medium. Dropping “all the way” down to 96 gives you the likes of Bi oShock, Goldeneye, Mass Effect 2, Tekken 3, Uncharted 2, Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, Skyrim, Resident Evil 4, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Half-Life 1 and 2.īreath of the Wild has not scored below a 9/10…anywhere, as of yet. So what is Breath of the Wild scoring above? Highlights of the 97 Metascore tier include Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, GTA V, GTA III, Halo: CE, Perfect Dark and Metroid Prime.
